Rabat, Morocco – Moroccan reports have revealed the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) stance on the request from Hani Abu Rida, president of the Egyptian Football Association. The request concerned increasing the number of clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.
Hany Abou Rida, president of the Egyptian Football Association, submitted a request to the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The request included increasing the number of clubs participating in the Champions League and Confederation Cup tournaments.
According to the Moroccan website “Al-Botola,” the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) competitions committee recommended rejecting the proposal submitted by the Egyptian Football Association. The proposal concerned increasing the number of clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, starting from the 2026-2027 season.
The website explained that the competitions committee received a letter yesterday from the Egyptian Football Association. The letter included a proposal to grant each member association an additional seat in both competitions. Accordingly, these seats would be allocated based on the ranking criteria and regulations adopted by CAF.
He added that the competitions committee recommended rejecting the proposal, explaining the reasons in an official memo submitted to the Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Nigerian Samson Adamu. The Secretary General then contacted CAF President Patrice Motsepe of South Africa to discuss the matter. This was done before the official response was sent to the Egyptian Football Association.
The Moroccan website noted that a member of the CAF Executive Committee declined to comment on the proposal. He explained that it had not yet been presented to the Executive Committee members, nor had they received any notification of an upcoming meeting date.
