Sydney, Australia – Football Federation Australia (FFA) announced its full support for coach Tony Popovic on Sunday, following a barrage of criticism directed at the coaching staff after Australia’s disappointing exit from the World Cup. This support put an end to speculation surrounding Popovic’s future. However, the team once again failed to progress beyond the knockout stages, losing to Egypt on penalties.
Controversial decisions
Popovic faced a barrage of criticism from several prominent former national team players for his questionable tactical decisions during last Friday’s Round of 32 match in Dallas. The criticism focused particularly on his substitution of starting goalkeeper Patrick Peach in the dying moments of extra time. Furthermore, he brought on his replacement, Matthew Ryan, in preparation for the penalty shootout, a move that proved unsuccessful. Ryan failed to save a single shot, and the match ended with Egypt winning 4-2 on penalties.
Popovic also came under scrutiny after assigning a crucial penalty to 18-year-old Lucas Herrington, who failed to convert it. This cost Australia a place in the next round and extended their winless streak in the World Cup knockout stages.
Administrative support and renewed confidence
In an attempt to quell the anger of fans and the media, Football Federation Australia CEO Martin Cogler defended the coaching staff’s decisions. Speaking to reporters in Dallas, Cogler said, “Every fan will think about what could have been done better, but the coaching staff and Tony Popovic are always best placed to judge what the team needs at that moment.”
He added, “Later, everyone knows what was best, but decisions are made in the moment based on training and communication with the players, so Tony has our full confidence.”
It is worth noting that Popovic, who took over in 2024 and successfully led the Socceroos to their sixth consecutive World Cup appearance, received a contract extension just before the start of the tournament. He will remain in his position until the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Kogler concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the federation is pleased with the extension decision, stating that Popovic is “the right person” to lead the team in the next phase. He also intends to implement the lessons learned from this tournament to ensure better results in future major competitions.
