Washington, DC – Anger has intensified among fans of the 2026 World Cup following the “suspicious” result of the Australia-Paraguay match in the final round of the group stage. The goalless draw, described by many as the most dismal in the tournament’s history, has fueled widespread suspicions of blatant collusion. Some believe it was done to facilitate both teams’ qualification for the knockout stages.

A predetermined scenario

Both teams entered the match fully aware of the complexities of Group D; a goalless draw would have given each of them four points, enough to guarantee passage to the next round behind group leaders the United States. As the final whistle blew in San Francisco, the expected scenario unfolded. Australia secured second place with a goal difference of zero, while Paraguay finished third with a goal difference of -2. This was sufficient for both teams to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.

Public anger and harsh criticism

This seemingly predetermined result did not go unnoticed, as it was met with a wave of scathing criticism on social media. Viewers ridiculed the lackluster performance, devoid of any real scoring opportunities, describing it as “the worst match in World Cup history, and perhaps in the history of mankind.”

In the same vein, many fans on FS1 questioned the integrity of the match, with the British newspaper The Sun reporting harsh comments from fans accusing both teams of match-fixing.

One Twitter user wrote: “It was the most blatant goalless draw ever; both teams will qualify and everyone is happy. Football has become a farce.”

Questions about the integrity of competition

These criticisms reflect a general dissatisfaction with the “game management” tactics employed by some teams to secure qualification with minimal effort, thus undermining the very essence of fair play.

While the players of both teams celebrated the result that granted them passage, this match remains a stain on the tournament’s history. Observers are calling for a review of the qualification systems that allow for such calculations, which stifle the spirit of football and transform the world’s biggest sporting event into a mere “training session” devoid of passion and genuine competition.
