Tehran, Iran – In a move that sparked widespread discontent among sports officials in Tehran, the Iranian Football Federation announced the withdrawal of the quota allocated to fans of the national team from the 2026 World Cup tickets, just days before the start of the tournament, further increasing the uncertainty surrounding the participation of “Iran’s Persians” in this major global event.
Shock to the fans and the cancellation of the session
The federation explained in an official statement that many fans had already finalized all travel and accommodation arrangements based on the official ticketing system, only to be surprised by the cancellation of their allocations without sufficient explanation as to who made this sudden decision or the reasons behind it. This crisis adds to a series of problems that the official ticketing platform has faced since its launch, including a technical glitch that resulted in the cancellation of tickets sold at incorrect prices.
Visa and logistics challenges
This crisis coincides with complex logistical and political challenges facing the Iranian mission in the host countries (the United States, Canada, and Mexico). The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that several administrative staff members, including Executive Director Mehdi Kharrati, Secretary General of the Football Federation Hedayat Mombeini, and Media Director Mohsen Motamedkia, were denied entry visas to the United States.
These difficulties prompted the Iranian national team to move part of its preparations to Mexico to avoid administrative complications. For fans, access to American stadiums is extremely difficult given the lack of diplomatic representation and direct transportation between Tehran and Washington.
Political dimensions and questions about the future
Observers agree that the withdrawal of Iran’s ticket allocation has implications beyond the purely sporting sphere, particularly given the ongoing political tensions between Iran and the United States. Iran is scheduled to play its first match in Group G on June 15 against New Zealand in Los Angeles, followed by matches against Belgium and Egypt.
As of now, uncertainty persists regarding the possibility of reaching a compromise that would allow Iranian fans to attend their national team’s matches. The international sporting community is closely monitoring developments in this matter, which presents FIFA and the organizing committee with a real test of their ability to balance sporting considerations with the current political climate.
