Damascus, Syria – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed that Syria today represents a “pillar of stability in the region,” renewing the international organization’s firm commitment to supporting its efforts to consolidate security and backing its new political and institutional phase.
The Secretary-General emphasized that the UN is closely monitoring developments and is fully prepared to assist in reinforcing recovery and building capable institutions.
Support for Transitional Justice and National Reconciliation
Guterres explained that the United Nations is fully prepared to support the transitional justice path in Syria, contributing effectively to national reconciliation, reinforcing the rule of law, and ensuring justice for affected individuals.
He stressed that transitional justice is one of the core pillars required to achieve sustainable stability and build institutions capable of meeting the aspirations of the Syrian people.
Upholding Syria’s Sovereignty and Rejecting Golan Violations
The Secretary-General underscored the UN’s unwavering adherence to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that respecting state sovereignty is a fundamental principle of the UN Charter.
Regarding the occupied Syrian Golan, Guterres stated that current developments there are “unacceptable,” calling for strict adherence to international law and UN resolutions to reduce regional tensions and foster peace.
