Damascus, Syria – A horrific collision between two buses on the Damascus-Deir ez-Zor highway on Saturday killed at least 35 people and injured 30 others, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). The Syrian Interior Ministry stated that the tragic accident occurred on the Deir ez-Zor-Damascus highway, resulting from a head-on collision between a bus carrying members of the Internal Security Forces and a civilian bus, leading to a high number of casualties. Following the disaster, the Ministry of Defense announced the dispatch of helicopters to immediately participate in the medical evacuation of the injured and the deceased, transporting them to the Homs Military Hospital for treatment.
For his part, the Director of the Directorate of Emergency and Disaster Management in Deir ez-Zor told SANA that a number of injured people had been transferred to the city of Palmyra, pointing out that field operations and search efforts are still continuing. The Syrian Civil Defense indicated that its teams went immediately after receiving the report from the Palmyra center with a request for urgent support from the Deir ez-Zor centers to respond to the accident, adding that its crews were able to fully control a huge fire that broke out as a result of the collision of the two buses, amid widespread alert by medical and ambulance teams to contain the repercussions of the traffic disaster, which is considered one of the deadliest accidents witnessed on the country’s highways recently.
