Cairo, Egypt – Days after the security campaign launched by the Egyptian authorities against a number of content creators, the Public Prosecution issued a detailed statement on the matter.
The Public Prosecution said that a group of content creators on TikTok were arrested after reports about them publishing indecent clips that offend societal values. They explained that a number of them were detained in pretrial detention, and their money was seized. This was part of efforts to combat harmful content spread on social media platforms. Especially, they aimed to protect young people from its negative effects.
The prosecution said in the statement that “the investigations resulted in the arrest of 10 defendants. Some of them were found in possession of a quantity of narcotics and an unlicensed firearm. In addition, there was a seizure of electronic devices that the Public Prosecution discovered from its review. These were used to create and manage private accounts on the aforementioned application and other social media applications. These accounts were followed by thousands of young people. They broadcast content that includes indecent words and phrases attacking the values and principles of Egyptian society.”
She added that this was aimed at “attracting the largest number of views and achieving illegal profits and financial gains, some of which have been seized.”
