Moscow, Russia – Russia has proposed a new approach aimed at restricting or banning content generated or manipulated using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies on social media platforms. This comes as part of its efforts to tighten control over the digital space and combat what it considers “misinformation” spreading rapidly through these technologies.
According to proposals published within a draft law regulating the AI sector, Russian authorities seek to require digital platforms to implement mechanisms for detecting AI-altered or fabricated content, particularly videos, images, and audio recordings that could be used for disinformation or political or social influence.
This move points to a broader trend in Moscow toward what it calls “digital sovereignty.” It is extending its control from the traditional internet to artificial intelligence tools themselves. This includes the ability to restrict or block certain foreign applications if they do not comply with new Russian regulations.
Observers believe this policy could reshape how social media platforms operate within Russia. This is happening by tightening control over automated or algorithmically generated content, at a time when global concerns are growing about the use of artificial intelligence to spread fake news and manipulate public opinion.
