London, England – In a move described as a “radical shift” in the UK’s digital policy, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday that his government intends to impose a comprehensive ban on social media use for those under 16.
This move will not only affect traditional social media platforms but will also extend to imposing stricter restrictions on online gaming platforms and live streaming services. This comes as part of a broader plan aimed at protecting minors and ensuring their safety in the digital space.
A complete ban… “The right option”
In strong statements underscoring the government’s resolve, Starmer explained that it was now clear to him that “a complete ban is the right option,” emphasizing that the government possesses both the will and the capability to counter the influence of Big Tech. Starmer acknowledged that implementing this decision would not be easy, given the technical complexities and the nature of how these platforms operate. However, he affirmed that the ultimate goal is to provide a safer internet environment for future generations.
Tightening control over technology companies
This move comes as part of a growing British effort to pressure technology companies in recent years. London has intensified its measures to force these companies to implement more accurate age verification mechanisms. London is also seeking to regulate algorithms that could negatively impact the mental health of minors, as well as to prevent the circulation of indecent images and digital threats.
International path towards digital regulation
It is worth noting that Britain is not the first country to take this path; Australia preceded it last September, when it became the first country to impose an official ban on the use of platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook for those under the age of sixteen.
The British move comes at a time when the international arena is witnessing a wave of similar legislation, with several countries announcing their intention to regulate access to social media, amid growing concerns from international organizations and parents about the impact of these platforms on the mental and physical well-being of minors. As these restrictions widen, attention is now turning to how tech giants will respond to this increasing pressure. At the same time, the question arises as to how effective these measures will be in curbing the negative effects of the digital world.
