Aden, Yemen – The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced on Monday that it had received a report of an attempted boarding of a container ship near the Yemeni coast. UKMTO stated that the incident occurred 14 nautical miles south of the coast, when a small boat approached the vessel and fired shots in an attempt to force its way onto the ship.
Tight security measures
Immediately after the incident, the relevant authorities launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the attack. As part of standard safety measures, the authority issued urgent instructions to all vessels operating in the area, emphasizing the need for extreme caution during transit. It also stressed the importance of immediately reporting any suspicious activity observed by ship crews to ensure a rapid response and the security of this strategic waterway.
A shift in maritime threat tactics
This incident comes amid a growing reliance by global shipping companies on private security teams equipped with light weapons as a defensive measure against the risks of piracy and surprise attacks.
Observers note that this tactic comes at a time when the nature of threats has shifted. The frequency of large-scale attacks using missiles and drones has decreased. In contrast, more direct operations, such as approaching with speedboats, have increased.
Context of regional tensions
It is worth noting that this region has witnessed a series of repeated attacks by the Houthi militia against commercial vessels since October 2023. These attacks often target ships linked to Israel, the United States, or the United Kingdom. This poses ongoing challenges to the security of international navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. These challenges also necessitate close international coordination to protect global supply chains.
