Beirut, Lebanon – Lebanese President Joseph Aoun welcomed on Monday the announcement of the historic memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran. He considered the inclusion of “Lebanon’s security and stability” within the agreement’s provisions a highly significant step.
Aoun expressed his hope that these diplomatic understandings would be translated into concrete, practical steps. He believes this could end the cycle of violence and pave the way for a new phase of recovery and reconstruction.
Praise for the agreement and emphasis on Lebanese sovereignty
In a statement published on the “X” platform, President Aoun affirmed that he was following the agreement’s contents with great interest. He also praised its emphasis on halting all military operations and escalation in the region, including on Lebanese territory.
Aoun added: “I appreciate the memorandum’s respect for Lebanese sovereignty and its recognition that Lebanon’s stability and security are an integral part of any serious effort to consolidate stability in the region, especially after the sacrifices and heavy burdens borne by the Lebanese people during the past period.”
Looking forward to practical steps to end the violence
Given Israel’s repeated statements rejecting a withdrawal from Lebanon under pressure, the importance of this agreement in providing an international framework for ending the conflict is underscored. Aoun emphasized that the Lebanese people, particularly those in areas that suffered attacks and destruction, now look forward to seeing these developments translated into concrete actions on the ground. They also hope these actions will put a definitive end to the violence and pave the way for comprehensive reconstruction.
A broader path to stability and sovereignty
Aoun also expressed his gratitude to all the countries and entities that contributed to the completion of this memorandum. He commended the international efforts that worked to include Lebanon in de-escalation efforts.
The Lebanese president concluded his statement by affirming that Lebanon hopes this development will mark the beginning of a broader process that strengthens regional stability and preserves the sovereignty of states and the rights of their people. Furthermore, this will allow the Lebanese people to focus on rebuilding what has been destroyed and restoring their normal lives within a safe and stable state, far removed from the horrors of war.
These official Lebanese positions come at a time when attention is focused on how the agreement’s provisions will be implemented on the ground. On the other hand, questions remain about the extent to which this diplomatic breakthrough will protect the country’s sovereignty and guarantee the security and stability of the Lebanese people in the coming period.
