Washington, DC – NASA has issued a new warning about the rapidly increasing number of commercial satellites orbiting Earth. The agency asserted that this uncontrolled expansion directly threatens the ability of ground-based and space-based telescopes to observe the sky clearly. This could disrupt scientific research and discovery in the coming years.

The agency stated that glare reflected from satellite constellations, along with congestion in low Earth orbits, distorts astronomical images. This creates light trails that hinder the capture of precise signals from deep space, posing increasing challenges for scientists as large-scale space communications projects proliferate.

NASA’s research team explained that the continued launch of hundreds—and perhaps thousands—of new satellites annually may force the scientific community to redesign observation systems. Some missions may even need to be moved to higher, more expensive orbits. They cautioned that the current situation is “unsustainable” in the long run.

Experts believe the impact extends beyond astronomical observations to include the accuracy of monitoring asteroids, comets, and near-Earth objects. This could reduce scientists’ ability to track space hazards early.

The agency calls for an international regulatory framework that sets a ceiling on emissions. It also requires companies to adhere to standards that reduce glare and reflections. It emphasizes that preserving humanity’s window to the universe is a shared responsibility that cannot be delayed.

South Korea began their 2026 World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in their opening Group A match early Friday morning. The game was played at the Estadio de Akron in Mexico, just hours after the host nation, Mexico, defeated South Africa 2-0 in the tournament's opening match. An Egyptian refereeing team, led by international referee Amin Omar, officiated the match, assisted by Mahmoud Abu El-Regal and Ahmed Hossam Taha, with Mahmoud Ashour in charge of VAR. The first half ended goalless, with both teams playing cautiously, before the pace of the game shifted in the second half. The Czech Republic took the lead in the 59th minute through Ladislav Krejčí, putting his team ahead and putting South Korea under pressure. South Korea responded quickly, with Beom Hwang equalizing in the 67th minute, bringing the game back to square one. The following minutes were full of excitement as the Czech Republic thought they had found the net again, but the goal was disallowed for offside after a review of the play. South Korea capitalized on their momentum, securing a 1-0 victory in the 80th minute through substitute Hyun-gyu Oh, who converted his team's second-half dominance into a valuable win. With this victory, South Korea moved to three points, sharing the top spot in Group A with Mexico, while the Czech Republic and South Africa remain without points after the opening round. The second round will feature a crucial match between Mexico and South Korea for the group lead, while the Czech Republic and South Africa will be looking to bounce back from their opening defeats when they meet in a match where further slip-ups are unacceptable.
