  • A traditional classification, not a definitive judgment on military power.

Tel Aviv, Israel – The 2026 Global Firepower ranking of conventional military strength shows Egypt ahead of Israel in the global rankings. Cairo came in second in the Middle East after Turkey. Meanwhile, Israel ranked third, according to an Israeli platform’s analysis of the rankings. According to data cited by the Israeli platform Natsiv Net, Turkey ranked first regionally and ninth globally. Egypt ranked second regionally and twelfth globally. Israel also ranked third in the Middle East and fifteenth globally. Iran came in fourth regionally.

Where does Egypt excel?

The Global Firepower ranking is based on a wide range of indicators related to conventional military strength. These indicators include manpower, land, air, and naval capabilities, resources, logistics, economic capacity, and other factors. According to these indicators, Egypt stands out in terms of troop size, land and naval capabilities, human resources, and geographic and logistical depth. These factors give countries with larger land areas and populations greater weight in the index. Notably, this is particularly true when assessing the ability to sustain prolonged military operations. The Egyptian Armed Forces are also characterized by the diversity of their armament sources. They possess American, Russian, and French equipment and systems. In addition, they have domestic military industries and production capabilities.

Israel excels in technology

Conversely, Egypt’s improved ranking does not imply absolute superiority over Israel in all aspects of military power. Israel maintains significant qualitative advantages, particularly in military technology, air power, intelligence, multi-layered air defense systems, and electronic warfare capabilities. These elements are not fully reflected by the quantitative indicators upon which the ranking is based. Furthermore, the Global Firepower methodology does not include nuclear capabilities in its military strength assessment. It also does not directly measure the impact of strategic alliances or certain qualitative and intelligence capabilities.

Why is Egypt advancing in the index?

This explains part of the difference in ranking between Egypt and Israel. Egypt possesses a large geographical area, a large population, and a substantial military force. Furthermore, it has massive land, naval, and air forces. It also has logistical resources that allow it to maintain extensive military capabilities. Israel, while possessing advanced technological and military capabilities, is less developed due to its smaller size and population compared to Egypt and Turkey. These factors influence certain quantitative and logistical indicators. These indicators are relied upon by Global Firepower.

A traditional classification, not a definitive judgment on military power.

The Global Firepower Index relies on more than 60 factors to assess a country’s conventional military strength, going beyond simply counting troops or weapons. Therefore, Egypt’s ranking ahead of Israel reflects a superiority across a range of indicators. This does not, however, constitute a definitive judgment that the Egyptian army is superior to the Israeli army in every aspect of modern warfare. Such a comparison is particularly relevant in the Middle East, where the nature of military power varies from country to country. While Egypt relies heavily on size, depth, and logistical capabilities, Israel focuses more on qualitative, technological, and intelligence superiority.
