Ankara, Turkey – An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck Gaziantep province in southeastern Turkey, near the Syrian border. It was also felt across large areas of northern Syria. The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the quake occurred at a depth of 7.44 kilometers. AFAD confirmed that there have been no reports of casualties or damage so far.

Identifying the focal point and Euro-Mediterranean Observatory estimates

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located at 37.132 degrees north latitude and 36.904 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 7 kilometers. In addition, EMSC data indicated that the epicenter was approximately 43 kilometers west of Gaziantep. It was also about 15 kilometers east of the Nurdaye district within the same province.

Seismic activity in the region and the anniversary of the 2023 earthquake

Gaziantep province is highly seismically active due to its proximity to the East Anatolian Fault. This is one of the most dangerous tectonic faults in the region. This tremor brings to mind the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake of February 2023. That disaster caused widespread destruction and severe damage to key landmarks in the city, including the historic Gaziantep Castle.
