Tel Aviv, Israel – The Israeli military announced on Thursday the killing of Omar Ahmed Abu Qassem, a senior commander in Hamas’s military wing. He was killed in a precision airstrike targeting central Gaza on Wednesday.
Details of the military operation
Israeli military spokeswoman Ella Wawiya explained in a statement published on the “X” platform that the operation targeted Abu Qassem, who served as the battalion-level sniper commander in Hamas’s military wing. According to the statement, the deceased was directly involved in carrying out and directing military operations targeting Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip throughout the war.
“Restoration” accusations
The Israeli army has leveled specific accusations against Abu Qassem, alleging that he has recently been working to rebuild the military capabilities of Hamas’s armed wing. He is also accused of planning new attacks, described as “terrorist,” against Israeli forces. Tel Aviv considers these actions a direct violation of the current interim ceasefire agreement. Commenting on the situation on the ground, the army spokesperson confirmed that Southern Command forces remain deployed to ensure compliance with the agreement. Furthermore, she emphasized that the army will continue its operations to eliminate any direct threats to its forces.
“Purge the cadres” strategy
This operation is part of a broader strategy pursued by the Israeli army for months, aimed at undermining the organizational and military infrastructure of Palestinian factions, specifically Hamas and Islamic Jihad. This raid comes in a series of targeted operations against prominent leaders. In recent weeks, Hamas’s military wing commander, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, and his successor, Muhammad Awda, were killed in separate raids. This reflects an intensification of Israeli intelligence and military efforts to cripple the field command capabilities of the factions in the Gaza Strip.
