Kyiv, Ukraine – Amid the rapidly evolving situation in Ukraine, Kyiv is witnessing high-level diplomatic activity today, Thursday, as outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrives for a visit that is one of his last foreign stops before he officially leaves office.
Starmer and Zelensky: Review of military support
A statement from Downing Street indicated that Starmer will hold in-depth talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, focusing on assessing progress in programs to supply Ukraine with the military equipment needed to counter a Russian invasion, as well as coordinating on the priorities of Western allies in the coming period. This visit comes at a politically sensitive time for the United Kingdom, as Andy Burnham is scheduled to be formally appointed leader of the Labour Party on Friday and will assume the role of Prime Minister next Monday, lending a farewell tone to Starmer’s visit.
Turkish presence in Kyiv
Concurrently with the British visit, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is continuing his two-day official visit to Ukraine (Wednesday and Thursday). This visit reaffirms Turkey’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, a position Ankara has maintained since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the subsequent full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022. At the same time, Ankara is keen to maintain open channels of communication with Moscow.
Turkish multilateral agenda
According to sources in the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Fidan’s program includes high-level meetings with President Zelensky, his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiha, and the Secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council, Rustam Umerov. Fidan is also paying particular attention to the Crimean Tatar issue, and is scheduled to meet with the head of the community, which is a significant component of the Ukrainian population whose rights and interests Ankara defends. These simultaneous international moves reflect the extent of Western and regional interest in the security situation in Ukraine and reveal ongoing coordination to ensure continued political and military support for Kyiv amidst the complexities of the international political and security landscape.
