Kyiv, Ukraine – The Ukrainian government has issued a direct and explicit call to the US administration to refocus its political and diplomatic efforts on the European front. This comes in the wake of Washington’s success in brokering a ceasefire agreement between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Kyiv believes that the recent breakthrough in the Middle East has demonstrated the effectiveness of US pressure when coupled with firm political will.
The success of “Al-Hazm” as a model for a solution
Agence France-Presse reported that Ukrainian officials viewed the recent developments in the Strait of Hormuz and Islamabad as proof that the United States still possesses sufficient deterrent capabilities. These capabilities enable it to compel adversaries to back down.
In this context, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha posted on his official social media accounts, asserting that “American resolve is clearly bearing fruit.” He suggested that the de-escalation of tensions between Iran and the United States should motivate Washington to adopt a similar stance toward the Kremlin.
Calls to end the Russian invasion
Sepega added, “We believe the time has come to take a decisive stance sufficient to compel Moscow to cease fire and end its war of aggression against Ukraine.”
These demands come at a time when Kyiv fears that the escalating crises in the Middle East will drain American military and financial resources. They could also distract the White House from the years-long Russian invasion.
sensitive timing
Observers believe that Kyiv is attempting to capitalize on the diplomatic momentum gained by the Trump administration regarding Iran to push for a just settlement in Ukraine that guarantees the return of its territory.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry emphasizes that Washington’s current policy of major deals must include protecting European national security and deterring Russian ambitions. The ministry also stresses the need for this protection to be as robust as the measures taken to secure shipping lanes and energy security in the Arabian Gulf, in order to ensure comprehensive and indivisible global stability.
