Cairo, Egypt – The Alamein International Air and Space Show has evolved beyond a mere platform for showcasing aircraft and fighter jets; it is gradually becoming a window into a broader shift in Egypt’s defense strategy. This strategy has transitioned from a reliance on purchasing off-the-shelf systems to expanding the domestic manufacturing base, alongside technology transfer and the development of drones, unmanned systems, munitions, smart systems, and space technology. The second edition of the show is scheduled for September 8–10, 2026, featuring participation from Egyptian military and civilian institutions as well as major international companies. Furthermore, there is a clear focus on drones, counter-drone systems, guided weapons, radar and electronic warfare capabilities, autonomous systems, and space technology.

The most significant aspect lies not in the specific type of weaponry on display, but in the underlying question: Can Egypt manufacture an increasing share of its defense requirements rather than relying entirely on foreign sources? In recent years, Cairo has expanded its industrial cooperation and technology transfer initiatives while simultaneously diversifying its arms procurement sources. Regarding the EDEX 2025 exhibition, Reuters reported that Egypt aims to become a regional hub for the defense industry, leveraging partnerships with international firms—including Chinese and French companies—alongside an expanding domestic industrial base. This highlights the importance of the Alamein exhibition; the landscape is no longer limited to merely receiving foreign products. Instead, the event brings together global corporations, Egyptian institutions, researchers, and developers across the aviation, defense, and space sectors in a single venue.
From the airplane to the robot
Modern warfare has altered the air power equation; drones have become a staple of the battlefield, while the importance of unmanned ground systems, electronic warfare, drone detection and interception systems, and precision munitions continues to grow. Studies by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) indicate that the conflict in Ukraine has demonstrated the critical need to produce unmanned systems at scale and to link military innovation with industrial capacity, rather than relying solely on high-cost platforms. In this context, the emergence of ground and aerial robots and autonomous systems within Egypt’s defense landscape carries significance that extends beyond the hardware itself; it reflects the defense industry’s entry into a realm that relies as much on software, artificial intelligence, sensors, and communications as it does on metal and engines.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global defense industry—a trend reflected at the EDEX 2025 exhibition, which showcased a wide array of drone technologies and counter-drone systems. According to Reuters, exhibitors displayed models of attack drones, AI-powered navigation systems, and anti-jamming technologies. Meanwhile, Egypt has been simultaneously forging partnerships to help build a regional defense manufacturing base. A notable example of this trajectory is the Egyptian “Jabbar” family of products, showcased at EDEX 2025; this signals a shift in local activity toward the design and manufacture of unmanned aerial platforms, moving beyond the mere operation of imported equipment.

Another lesson imposed by modern warfare is that possessing advanced platforms alone is insufficient; the United States itself faces a major debate in 2026 regarding ammunition stockpiles and the industrial capacity to replenish high consumption rates. The CSIS notes that the sustainability of military power hinges on the industrial base’s ability to produce munitions and rapidly rebuild inventories. Consequently, the development of guided munitions, unmanned systems, and sensor technologies has become part of a long-term industrial battle—it is not merely a matter of procuring new weaponry. Egypt’s imports of major arms declined by 44% between the 2015–2019 and 2020–2024 periods, causing the country to drop from third to eighth place among the world’s largest arms importers. More importantly, the composition of these imports has changed: while aircraft accounted for 51% of Egypt’s major arms imports during the first period, naval vessels constituted approximately 65% of imports during 2020–2024. This does not imply that Egypt has ceased purchasing advanced weaponry; rather, it signals a shift in the volume and composition of imports, coinciding with efforts to expand domestic capabilities and industrial partnerships.
Sisi and Forging “Capability Before Weaponry”
Under the tenure of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, diversifying arms sources and expanding military and industrial partnerships have become hallmarks of Egypt’s defense policy. Yet, the most significant development goes beyond merely diversifying suppliers to diversifying the sources of technology itself. Indeed, industrial partnerships offer Egypt something distinct from the purchase of off-the-shelf weaponry: expertise, supply chains, maintenance and development capabilities, and the potential for domestic production of components or systems—all while establishing a foundation for future growth. Consequently, Egypt’s hosting of an event bringing together the aviation, defense, and space industries represents more than just an international gathering; it is an effort to position Cairo at the heart of a regional network for technological and industrial cooperation.
Al Alamein: An Egyptian Platform for a Larger Market
The participation of major international companies and organizations in the Alamein exhibition also reflects Egypt’s expanding role as a meeting point connecting the global defense industry with African and Arab markets. The exhibition positions Egypt as a regional hub for aviation, space, and defense, featuring the participation of the Ministry of Defense, the Air Force, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Egyptian Space Agency, and EgyptAir. This standing is further underscored by the trend among many nations to rebuild their defense capabilities, alongside rising demand for drones, counter-drone systems, artificial intelligence, and electronic warfare technologies.
The Real Battle Behind the Exhibition
If fighter jets reflect military might, then manufacturing facilities and research and development centers reflect the sustainability of that power—and therein lies the significance of the Alamein exhibition for Egypt. Cairo is not merely seeking to acquire modern platforms; it is working to expand the entire ecosystem supporting them: manufacturing, maintenance, development, software, drones, robotics, munitions, sensing technologies, and space capabilities. In a world where warfare tests a nation’s ability to rapidly replenish losses and produce essential supplies, the capacity to manufacture and develop weaponry may well become just as critical as possessing it.
From Importer to Partner
Egypt’s new equation does not entail abandoning imports; acquiring world-class fighter jets, naval vessels, and defense systems will remain part of its armament strategy. However, the most significant trend is Egypt’s move toward a model that combines procurement, manufacturing, development, and partnerships. In this light, the Alamein exhibition can be viewed as a milestone in a broader project: transforming Egypt from a major arms market into a nation with a defense industrial base capable of producing a portion of its own requirements. Furthermore, Egypt is now able to assimilate foreign technology and develop its own products—potentially even competing in regional markets in the future.
In the new arms race, the most powerful nation may not simply be the one possessing the most expensive fighter jet, but rather the one capable of producing what it needs as the nature of warfare shifts. From this perspective, the most significant aspect of what Egypt is showcasing in El Alamein is not a specific aircraft, robot, or munition; instead, it is the effort to build an industrial capability that makes decisions regarding weaponry less dependent on foreign markets and more reliant on what Cairo can manufacture and develop indigenously.
