Washington, USA – In a prominent television interview with ABC News, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the final decision on how to deal with the Iranian issue rests exclusively with US President Donald Trump, while denying reports accusing him of trying to pressure Washington to continue military attacks against the Islamic Republic amidst ongoing talks and diplomatic efforts.

Doubts about Tehran’s behavior and the usefulness of negotiations

Netanyahu expressed deep skepticism about the possibility of reaching a genuine and lasting agreement with Iran, questioning the likelihood of Tehran changing its behavior. He stated, “I don’t know if this possibility is out of the question, but I am skeptical of Iran’s modus operandi; they always lie, they always cheat, and they always try to buy time.” He then questioned whether this evasive behavior could change under sufficient pressure, including diplomatic and economic pressure, adding that this remains to be seen.

The nature of the strategic partnership and American support

Following his anticipated meeting with the US president, Netanyahu affirmed his conviction that Trump is the driving force behind the strategic partnership between Washington and Israel. He explained, “The truth is that we are partners and allies, and he is the senior partner—the United States of America—and we must not forget that. I am the junior partner, but I am the Prime Minister of Israel, and I will defend my country’s interests and security whenever necessary.” He also expressed his deep gratitude for the pivotal role played by the Trump administration in standing firmly with Israel against what he described as the “common enemy” seeking to destroy them both.

The three options for the future of regional conflict

In a related development, Netanyahu revealed that his closed-door meeting with the US president addressed three main options for dealing with the Iranian threat. These options are: negotiating a broader agreement with Tehran, maintaining the naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and taking further measures, including large-scale military strikes. Netanyahu concluded by emphasizing that determining the most appropriate course of action and making the final decision on any of these options rests solely with US President Donald Trump, amidst widespread regional and international anticipation of the outcome of these sensitive strategic discussions.
