The US strategy centers on tightening the noose around Tehran’s ability to export oil, the lifeblood of its economy. This is being done in an attempt to force the Iranian leadership back to the negotiating table and conclude a new nuclear agreement with stricter terms.
Despite the focus on economic tools and naval pressure, the US president has not ruled out other options. He has also left the door open to the possibility of resuming military action if necessary.
In a related development, White House spokeswoman Olivia Wells stated that the intense military and economic pressure campaign is beginning to bear fruit. She said it has led to increased “desperation” within Iran.
Wells affirmed that the US administration possesses all the necessary tools and time to continue this approach. She emphasized that the goal is to reach what she termed “the best possible deal” that serves US interests and ensures regional security.
This escalation comes at a sensitive time, with global markets closely monitoring international shipping lanes, especially given Trump’s prior involvement in the Strait of Hormuz and the Suez Canal.
The move toward a prolonged naval blockade represents a shift in the balance of power. Washington seeks to leverage its naval influence to achieve political gains without necessarily engaging in a full-scale land confrontation. It also aims to deplete Iranian resources and completely disrupt oil tanker traffic.
