London, England – Liverpool FC have reached an agreement with FC Barcelona for the transfer of Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo. This deal is intended to bolster the team’s defense ahead of the new season.
According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona have agreed to loan Araujo to Liverpool for one season. There is also an option for the English club to make the move permanent during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Romano indicated that an agreement between all parties is now complete. The contracts are expected to be officially signed within the next 24 hours, paving the way for the deal’s announcement.
Araujo is close to leaving Barcelona
Araujo is 27 years old and has made over 200 appearances for Barcelona since joining the first team. He has also contributed to the club winning the Spanish league title three times in the last four seasons.
Despite his importance to the Catalan team, the Uruguayan defender’s role diminished last season. He started only 11 La Liga matches after Hansi Flick relied more heavily on Pau Cuperci and Gerard Martin in the back line.
Araujo was a key player for Barcelona in recent years. He even took over the captain’s armband after the departure of German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen. His playing time, however, noticeably declined last season.
Liverpool strengthens its defense
Liverpool’s move to sign Araujo comes as the team seeks to bolster its defense, having suffered repeated absences due to injuries. This has prompted the club’s management to act to provide manager Andoni Iraola with additional options.
Araujo is expected to be a strong addition to Liverpool’s defense once the deal is finalized, especially given his extensive experience in European and Spanish competitions.
