Tel Aviv, Israel – The Israeli Attorney General’s office confirmed in a recent report submitted to the Supreme Court that National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir continues to disregard the principle of police independence. He also persists in attempting to exert political influence over the force’s operational decisions.

Significant gaps in judicial compliance

The report submitted to the court indicated “significant gaps” in the minister’s adherence to the judicial framework previously established by the Supreme Court. This framework aims to curb ministerial interference in police work and ensure their professional impartiality, free from any political directives. The Attorney General emphasized that current procedures have failed to deter Ben-Gvir. She also noted that the minister continues to disregard the restrictions preventing his intervention in field and operational decisions. Consequently, this threatens the fundamental constitutional principle of separating security operations from political influence.

Context of the judicial conflict

These sharp criticisms come within a broader context of legal petitions that have previously called for Ben-Gvir’s dismissal. Last February, the Supreme Court ordered Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to justify the minister’s continued tenure.

However, in April, the court refrained from issuing a direct dismissal order. Instead, it imposed a “framework of principles” that bound the minister to specific limits and granted him temporary restrictions. The court also allowed room for negotiation regarding detailed procedures to ensure compliance.

However, the Attorney General’s latest report reflects the failure of these efforts to contain the minister’s transgressions, bringing the issue back to the forefront and presenting the Supreme Court with a new challenge regarding the judiciary’s ability to compel government members to adhere to constitutional rules.

Observers suggest that this report could pave the way for a new round of legal battles. Furthermore, concerns are growing that Ben-Gvir’s continued interference in police work is undermining public trust in the security establishment and transforming it into a tool for serving narrow political agendas. This is precisely what the Attorney General is striving to prevent through her oversight reports to the court.
