New York, USA – The New York City Department of Health announced that the death toll from the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in the Upper East Side has risen to three. There are 74 confirmed cases, and eight patients remain hospitalized.

Health authorities are warning and monitoring

In a statement, New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Alistair F. Martin expressed his deepest condolences for the loss of life. He also confirmed that health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and working to track new cases to contain the spread of the disease. The Department of Health urged residents and visitors who were in the areas with zip codes 10028, 10075, and 10128—which include the neighborhoods of Carnegie Hill and Yorkville—to seek immediate medical attention if they develop flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath. Furthermore, the incubation period for the bacteria can extend up to 14 days after exposure.

Source of pollution and prevention measures

The administration confirmed that it believes the primary source of the bacteria has been eliminated. At the same time, it emphasized that thorough inspections of all cooling towers where the bacteria were detected will continue to ensure the water systems remain free of contamination.

Legitimate disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by inhaling Legionella bacteria through tiny airborne droplets. These bacteria often grow in indoor heating systems, such as cooling towers, hot water tanks, and plumbing systems.

Background on the disease and its risks

Legionnaires’ disease is not usually transmitted from person to person. However, infection rates have fluctuated over the past decade, rising again starting in 2021 after a significant decline during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although antibiotics are effective in treating most cases, the disease remains a serious concern for health authorities due to the severe complications it can cause in people with weakened immune systems or chronic lung disease. Therefore, it remains a threat that requires constant vigilance.
