Ankara, Turkey – In a dramatic development reflecting escalating regional tensions, The Jerusalem Post revealed that US Defense Secretary Pete Haigset has canceled his planned visit to Israel on Wednesday. He was scheduled to hold high-level security talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz. This sudden move comes as Haigset is in the Turkish capital, Ankara, accompanying US President Donald Trump for the NATO summit.
Trump ends truce: “The memorandum of understanding is over.”
On the sidelines of the summit, the US president dealt a severe blow to de-escalation efforts, declaring to reporters that the ceasefire with Iran had effectively ended. Trump stated decisively, “In my opinion, the ceasefire is over. I don’t want to deal with them anymore,” emphasizing that continuing dialogue with Tehran was “a waste of time,” despite Iranian negotiators’ indications of their willingness to resume talks. This stance formally ends the memorandum of understanding signed on June 17th, which was intended to pave the way for a final peace agreement within 60 days.
spiral of military escalation
The collapse of the truce came as a result of a series of intense tit-for-tat strikes; the US military announced it had launched extensive airstrikes targeting more than 80 strategic sites inside Iran. These strikes included command centers and defense systems, as well as the destruction of 60 Iranian Revolutionary Guard fast attack craft. These attacks were in retaliation for Tehran’s attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
For its part, Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Construction Headquarters described the US airstrikes—which coincided with Ali Khamenei’s funeral in Iraq—as “blatant aggression,” vowing a “crushing” response. In line with these threats, the Revolutionary Guard launched missile and drone attacks targeting vital infrastructure in both Kuwait and Bahrain. This brought the region to the brink of a full-blown confrontation.
Observers believe that the cancellation of the US Secretary of Defense’s visit to Israel at this critical juncture indicates a shift in American priorities toward managing the direct military crisis with Iran. This shift comes at the expense of focusing on traditional regional security issues, signaling a new phase of open confrontation that could reshape the entire security landscape of the Middle East.
