Washington, DC – A new US bill has reignited the debate surrounding the nature of military relations between the United States and Israel, following the inclusion of Section 224 in the National Defense Authorization Act. Section 224 expands defense and technological cooperation between the two countries in several advanced military sectors.
The section aims to enhance cooperation in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, quantum computing, drones, and advanced defense systems. Furthermore, it supports joint research, development, and production programs for military equipment and technologies, thereby increasing coordination between the two defense establishments.
Supporters of the project believe this step will accelerate the development of military technology and enhance joint defense capabilities. It will also help address the growing security challenges in the region by unifying efforts in the areas of innovation and defense manufacturing.
Conversely, the project has drawn criticism from some experts and researchers who warn that expanding this cooperation could grant Israel a larger role within the American defense industry. It could also open the door to an unprecedented level of integration between the two sides in the fields of armament and military technology.
Article 224 remains part of a bill under discussion in the US Congress. It has not yet entered into force, as the necessary legislative procedures must be completed before its final approval.
