Washington, DC – The United States has announced a comprehensive review of its military deployments in Europe. This comes as the US warns NATO allies that some financial contributions could be suspended if member states do not commit to increasing their defense spending.
A 6-month US review
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the new review will last up to six months and will include consultations with the US Congress.
He explained that the goal is to ensure European countries take greater responsibility for the continent’s defense while maintaining the US military’s ability to meet its global commitments.
He indicated that Washington seeks to move NATO toward a stage where Europe assumes the leading role in protecting its own security and defending its strategic interests.
Hegseth criticized some allies who did not provide sufficient support to the United States during the war with Iran.
He also confirmed that the review will include an examination of issues related to the rights to use military bases and freedom of overflight over the territories of allied countries.
The US Secretary hinted at the possibility of suspending some US financial contributions to the alliance if certain countries continue to fail to meet their defense obligations.
NATO is rushing to close military gaps
For his part, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that the reduction in some US military contributions has already taken effect.
He also noted that European countries and Canada have begun taking steps to compensate for the capabilities withdrawn by Washington.
He explained that European allies have pledged to replace a significant portion of the US military equipment and capabilities.
Consultations are ongoing to address the remaining needs before the next NATO summit.
These developments come as the administration of US President Donald Trump moves to redistribute its global military priorities.
In this context, the administration is focusing more on the Indo-Pacific region. This is prompting European countries to accelerate their plans to strengthen their defense capabilities and reduce their reliance on the US military umbrella.
