California, USA – Switzerland put one foot in the next round of the 2026 World Cup, after achieving a big win over Bosnia and Herzegovina with a score of 4-1, in the match that brought them together on Thursday evening as part of the second round of Group B.
The match remained evenly matched for long periods, before the Swiss team managed to break through the Bosnian defense during the final minutes, turning the match into a goal fest that secured the three points.
The opening goal came in the 74th minute through Johan Manzambi, who took advantage of a mistake by the Bosnia and Herzegovina goalkeeper, who failed to deal with a powerful shot, allowing the ball to find the back of the net.
The Bosnian team’s task became even more complicated after Tarik Mahremovic was sent off in the 80th minute following a strong tackle, leaving his team to finish the last minutes with ten players.
The Swiss team capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Ruben Vargas adding a second goal in the 84th minute with a well-placed shot from inside the penalty area. Manzambi then returned to score his second and Switzerland’s third goal in the 90th minute.
Despite Ermin Mahmic’s success in narrowing the gap for Bosnia and Herzegovina during stoppage time, Switzerland refused to end the match without a fourth goal, after they were awarded a penalty kick which was successfully executed by captain Granit Xhaka in the 97th minute.
