Georgia, USA – South Africa kept their hopes alive of qualifying for the next round of the 2026 World Cup. They secured a valuable 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in a match played on Thursday evening as part of the second round of Group A.

The Czech Republic started the match strongly, opening the scoring early in the sixth minute through Michal Sadilek. He capitalized on goalkeeper Ronwen Williams’ advanced position, firing a low shot into the net and giving his team an early advantage.

South Africa tried to get back into the game and threatened the Czech goal on several occasions. The most notable chance came when Ozwein Abolis’ shot was deflected for a corner. Furthermore, the team missed a clear opportunity in first-half stoppage time when Thapelo Masiko failed to capitalize on a mistake by the Czech goalkeeper.

In the second half, the Czech Republic continued to press for a second goal. However, goalkeeper Williams’ brilliance prevented them from doubling their lead, as he made several crucial saves, including a shot from Lukas Cerf and a header from Patrik Schick.

As the match neared its end, South Africa had a golden opportunity to get back into the game. This came after American referee Tori Benso awarded a penalty in the 81st minute for a handball inside the penalty area.

Teboho Mokoena successfully converted the penalty into an equalizer in the 83rd minute. This ignited the final minutes and gave his country a valuable point in the qualification race.

With this draw, both teams earned their first point in the group. South Africa began their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Mexico, while the Czech Republic fell to South Korea 2-1.

All eyes now turn to the decisive third round, where South Africa will face South Korea, while the Czech Republic will take on Mexico in a battle for a place in the knockout stages.
