Damascus – Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab affirmed that the issuance of the first death sentences against perpetrators of crimes and violations represents a historic step toward achieving justice for victims and enforcing accountability. Consequently, these developments highlight a major shift in Syria’s legal and political landscape following rulings issued by the Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus.

Furthermore, Khattab stated on the “X” platform that justice is prevailing for victims of atrocities committed across the country, emphasizing that national authorities will persist in prosecuting all involved individuals. As a result, judicial procedures are being extended to pursue fugitives abroad to ensure comprehensive legal accountability.

Verdicts Targeting Former Leadership and Judicial Accountability

On the other hand, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the court handed down death sentences in absentia against former president Bashar al-Assad, his brother Maher al-Assad, and several high-ranking military and intelligence officials. Specifically, these rulings aim to lay the groundwork for a new governance era centered on institutional integrity and transitional justice.

Additionally, the judicial action signals a firm commitment to broadening the scope of accountability for war crimes and grave human rights violations. Consequently, advancing transitional justice relies heavily on domestic judicial capacity and international cooperation to extradite wanted figures.

Finally, the capital’s judicial rulings mark a decisive milestone in Syria’s post-conflict legal trajectory. Ultimately, international cooperation regarding extradition requests and field implementation will dictate the effectiveness of these historical verdicts.
