Pereira – Pereira Mayor Mauricio Salazar declared an immediate curfew across the Colombian city to curb looting and secure property following a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake. Consequently, these heightened security measures highlight the operational chaos and safety risks that arose immediately after the seismic event.

Furthermore, Salazar—who appeared visibly shaken during his statement—emphasized that restricting nighttime movement provides a secure perimeter for first responders and rescue crews. As a result, municipal authorities deployed additional police forces to prevent opportunistic crimes while directing residents to adhere to public safety guidelines.

Rescue Operations, Class Suspensions, and Relief Deployment

On the other hand, emergency responders and volunteer teams are working continuously to extract individuals trapped under collapsed structures throughout Pereira and adjacent municipalities. Specifically, government engineering teams are conducting urgent structural integrity assessments on public infrastructure before authorizing re-entry.

Additionally, regional officials suspended classes across primary, secondary, and tertiary educational institutions within affected disaster zones. Consequently, coordinating humanitarian relief and maintaining public order remain the immediate priorities for national and local disaster response management.

Finally, the curfew in Pereira underscores the critical state of affairs caused by Colombia’s 7.4-magnitude earthquake. Ultimately, the speed of search-and-rescue operations and the effectiveness of security measures will dictate the recovery outcome for affected communities.
