Beirut, Lebanon – The Lebanese presidency confirmed that President Joseph Aoun instructed the negotiating delegation to adhere to the official Lebanese position during the talks scheduled for next week in Washington. These talks will bring together Lebanese, American, and Israeli representatives.
Official directives ahead of the Washington tour
The Lebanese presidency stated that Aoun, during his directives, stressed the necessity of full adherence to Lebanon’s fundamental principles in the negotiations. He also affirmed that no concessions would be made that infringe upon sovereign rights or the state’s core positions. Furthermore, he emphasized that the delegation represents the Lebanese state in its entirety, including all its institutions.
These developments come ahead of a round of talks in Washington involving Lebanese, American, and Israeli delegations. This comes amidst complex issues related to the border situation in southern Lebanon and ongoing military tensions. In addition, there are accumulated security and political issues between the three parties.
Political sources indicated that these talks are among the most sensitive rounds in recent times, due to the direct overlap of military, political, and security matters.
A Lebanese stance that focuses on fundamental principles
The Lebanese presidency stressed that Lebanon’s position is based on protecting national sovereignty and rejecting any arrangements that infringe upon Lebanon’s rights or lead to the imposition of new realities on the ground.
At the same time, it emphasized the importance of diplomatic solutions to avoid escalation.
It added that the negotiating delegation will work to present Lebanon’s vision clearly.
It also stressed that any future understandings must take into account regional balances and the interests of the Lebanese state.
Aoun’s statements come at a time of ongoing tension along Lebanon’s southern border.
This comes amid concerns that regional developments could affect the course of the upcoming negotiations in Washington.
