Vienna, Austria – Reuters reported that the United States submitted a draft resolution to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors calling on Iran to grant the agency’s inspectors greater authority. The draft also calls for ensuring full and unrestricted access to information and sites related to Iran’s nuclear program.
Commitment to providing reliable information
The draft resolution emphasizes the need for Iran to provide the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with accurate and detailed data on nuclear materials and facilities within its territory. This would allow for verification of the nature of its nuclear activities and its compliance with international agreements and safeguards obligations.
Expanding the powers of international inspectors
The proposal also stipulates granting the agency’s inspection teams expanded powers, allowing them unrestricted access to relevant sites. This would enable them to conduct on-site verification without hindrance, thereby strengthening oversight and transparency mechanisms in the Iranian nuclear program.
Disagreements escalate over the nuclear issue
The proposal comes amid continued disagreement between Iran and Western countries over the required level of cooperation. While Washington demands stricter monitoring and additional guarantees, Tehran insists its nuclear program is peaceful. Furthermore, some parties are accused of attempting to use the International Atomic Energy Agency for political purposes.
