Moscow, Russia – In a new escalation that raises tensions between Moscow and European capitals, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, issued a stern warning to European leaders. He asserted that they should expect a recurrence of drone incursions into their airspace and crashes on their territory in the near future.
Drone crash in Romania sparks tension
This shocking Russian stance came after Romania, a member of NATO and the European Union, announced that a Russian drone had crashed into a residential building in one of its towns during Russian airstrikes on targets in Ukraine. The incident sparked outrage in Brussels, with NATO quickly describing it as conclusive proof of Russia’s “reckless behavior” and reaffirming its unwavering commitment to defending the territorial integrity of its member states.
Medvedev: Europe is a direct partner in the conflict
Despite Medvedev’s attempt to evade direct responsibility, claiming that “ownership of the drone is still unclear,” he quickly shifted to a political attack. He explicitly accused European countries of direct involvement in the war against Russia. Medvedev asserted that these incidents were not accidental, but rather a natural consequence of what he termed “European complicity.” He also warned that the pace of these incursions would continue and would not be limited to the current level.
European diplomatic and defense moves
For its part, Bucharest took immediate diplomatic action by summoning the Russian ambassador to protest. It also called on the European Union leadership to urgently provide advanced anti-drone defense capabilities. Data from the Romanian Ministry of Defense reveals the scale of the security challenge, recording 28 violations of Romanian airspace since Russia began its campaign targeting Ukrainian ports along the Danube River.
Security alert in the Old Continent
This Russian threat has prompted other countries to raise their security alert levels. Latvia has already begun bolstering its air defenses and deploying military reinforcements along its borders with Russia and Belarus, fearing that its airspace could become a theater of Russian military operations. It appears that the European continent is now facing a new security reality. The war is no longer confined within Ukraine’s borders; its repercussions are now reaching deep into Europe. This is putting European air defense systems to a real and direct test.
