Vienna, Austria – Asylum applications to Austria continued their decline during the first third of this year. A significant drop in the total number of applications was recorded compared to the same period last year.
Official data shows that the number of asylum applications reached 3,397 from the beginning of January to the end of April 2026.
This indicates a continued downward trend in asylum applications within Austria.
A significant decrease in total orders
Statistics show that total asylum applications have decreased by approximately 45% compared to 2025.
It’s worth noting that the recorded figure includes applications from individuals who recently arrived in the country,
as well as applications related to children born within Austria.
The data indicates that only about 1,410 applications were from new arrivals,
while the remaining applications pertained to existing cases within Austria.
Continuous decline over the past months
The report indicated that the decline in asylum applications was not only steady but also steadily increasing over the preceding months.
The drop reached at least 41% at certain times, and even climbed to 45% by the end of April.
According to observers, this trend reflects the tightening of immigration and asylum procedures within the country.
The position of the Austrian Ministry of the Interior
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner described the decline as a “positive development.”
He emphasized that his country’s policy aims to combat the abuse of the asylum system while ensuring protection for those most in need.
He added that the government is working to strike a balance between humanitarian obligations and reducing pressure on Austria’s asylum system.
