Cairo, Egypt – As part of Egypt’s intensive diplomatic efforts to contain regional crises, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty held a telephone conversation with Kaya Callas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The call addressed the rapidly evolving situation in the region and ways to enhance bilateral cooperation.
Egyptian-European coordination to de-escalate tensions
During the call, Minister Abdel-Aty briefed the European official on the intensive efforts being made by the Egyptian state to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire and de-escalate military tensions.
Abdel-Aty emphasized that Egypt is working in close coordination with regional and international partners to ensure that the region does not slide into a wider conflict that threatens international peace and security. He noted that Cairo places the stability of the Middle East at the forefront of its diplomatic priorities.
The repercussions of the Islamabad negotiations
The meeting witnessed an in-depth exchange of assessments and perspectives on the current regional situation, particularly following the recent US-Iranian negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan. The two sides discussed the outcomes of these talks and their potential impact on the region’s complex issues. In this context, the Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed the necessity of concerted regional and international efforts, including the pivotal role of the European Union. This aims to advance the diplomatic process and adopt political solutions as the only alternative to armed conflict.
A well-established strategic partnership
During the talks, both sides affirmed the strength of the relationship between Egypt and the European Union, which has risen to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership.
Abdel-Aty and Kallas agreed on the importance of maintaining ongoing coordination and consultation to address shared security and economic challenges.
He said, “The stability of the region requires a unified international will that supports peaceful paths and puts an end to escalation policies, which is what Egypt seeks to achieve through its open diplomatic channels with all parties.” The two officials concluded their call by emphasizing the need for joint action to provide a conducive environment for security and development. They stressed their commitment to continuing the constructive dialogue between Cairo and Brussels within the framework of a shared vision to consolidate stability in the Mediterranean and Middle East regions.
