Madrid, Spain – The Spanish government downplayed threats made by US President Donald Trump to sever trade ties with Spain. It considered such statements “commonplace” and said they did not warrant concern or a change in Madrid’s approach to its relations with Washington.
Sources within the Spanish government emphasized that economic and trade relations between the two countries are based on shared interests and existing agreements. They also pointed out that any decisions concerning international trade are not based on political statements, but rather are governed by established legal and institutional frameworks.
She added that Madrid will continue working with the United States to maintain economic and investment cooperation, while emphasizing the importance of dialogue to address any disagreements that may arise between the two sides.
The Spanish position follows statements by Trump in which he threatened to cut all trade ties with Spain, describing it as a “bad partner” within NATO. This represents the latest chapter in the escalating tensions between the two countries.
