New Delhi, India – A serious maritime incident occurred in the territorial waters off the east coast of India after a cargo ship sank in the Bay of Bengal. Indian authorities have launched an urgent search and rescue operation for the crew members of the Panamanian-flagged vessel, which was carrying 24 people of various nationalities. The ship sank while sailing on a shipping route off the coast of Odisha state. Authorities subsequently lost contact with the vessel and began searching for its location.
Rescue teams managed to reach and rescue two crew members. While the search continued in the area for the remaining sailors, whose fate is still unknown, Indian authorities deployed several coast guard units and specialized vessels to participate in the rescue operations. Maritime surveillance equipment was also used to determine the ship’s last known location and to track any signals that might lead to the missing crew members. The cause of the sinking remains unclear. Authorities are continuing to gather information about the circumstances of the incident, including weather and sea conditions, and the ship’s route before contact was lost.
The incident occurred in an area with heavy commercial shipping traffic, highlighting once again the challenges of maritime safety and the need for a rapid response to incidents at sea, especially when vessels are far from rescue ports. Indian rescue teams are continuing their search operations, hoping to find more crew members. Meanwhile, the families of the missing sailors await the results of the authorities’ efforts to determine the fate of the missing and uncover the full circumstances of the incident.
