Rabat, Morocco – In a significant move with political and diplomatic implications, the Kingdom of Morocco announced the naming of the highway linking the cities of Tiznit and Dakhla, one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects, after President Donald J. Trump. This is in recognition of US President Donald Trump’s supportive stances towards Morocco, most notably the United States’ recognition of the Kingdom’s sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara.
The new highway stretches for approximately 1,055 kilometers and is considered one of the most important strategic projects being implemented by Rabat to enhance connectivity between the north and south of the country and to support trade and investment, particularly in conjunction with the Dakhla Atlantic Port project, which the Kingdom envisions as an economic gateway linking Europe to West Africa.
US President Donald Trump expressed his delight at this honor, thanking Moroccan King Mohammed VI and describing the naming of the road after him as a “great honor.” He also expressed his desire to visit Morocco and travel the entire length of the road in the near future.
This decision comes within the context of the close relations between Rabat and Washington, which have witnessed significant development during the Trump administration, following the United States’ 2020 recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, a position Rabat considered a historic turning point in the conflict.
Observers believe that naming the road after Trump carries political messages that go beyond symbolism. It reflects Morocco’s keenness to value its strategic partnerships with the United States and underscores the importance of American support for major development projects aimed at boosting economic growth and connecting the southern provinces to the rest of the Kingdom.
