Moscow, Russia – The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Monday that Russian forces had shelled two ships carrying military equipment and supplies in the port of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine. Reuters reported that it was unable to independently verify the field reports and information from the battlefield.
This attack comes amid a marked and reciprocal escalation of military activity between Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov and surrounding areas over the past few weeks, with each side attacking dozens of ships and naval vessels, including oil tankers and various cargo ships.
Last Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces had launched a series of intense attacks targeting Ukrainian ports and ships.
In an official statement published on the Telegram messaging app, the ministry said that Russian forces shelled the container terminal at the port of Chornomorsk, near Odessa, Ukraine’s main Black Sea port, noting that the terminal was handling “military cargo.”
The statement added that a bulk cargo ship, also classified as carrying military cargo, was shelled south of Odessa. A subsequent statement from the ministry indicated that Russian forces shelled two other bulk cargo ships, without providing precise details about the location of this latest attack. This reflects an escalation in naval military operations and the targeting of supply and logistics lines along the Ukrainian coast.
