Tehran, Iran – Iran’s Bushehr province and neighboring coastal areas are experiencing heightened security tensions. Local media reported on Thursday, July 9, 2026, hearing a series of explosions in the cities of Bushehr and Chughadak. Simultaneously, there are reports of attacks targeting strategic infrastructure.
Sporadic explosions and escalation on the ground
The Iranian “Fars” and “Mehr” agencies reported on Thursday afternoon that strong explosions were heard throughout the city of Bushehr. Eyewitnesses reported at least two large explosions. Other reports also confirmed that a series of similar explosions had occurred in Chugadak.
In a related context, the Governor of Asalouye, Skender Baslar, confirmed in an interview with Mehr Agency that two “enemy” projectiles hit the Bunod fishing pier this morning. This led to the outbreak of widespread fires that destroyed more than 10 fishing boats that were anchored at the site.
The Fars News Agency, affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard, reported that an airstrike targeted the Aqtaba Khan railway bridge early Thursday morning. This bridge is a vital link between China, Turkmenistan, and Iran, indicating a broadening of targets to include economic and logistical infrastructure. Simultaneously, unconfirmed reports from local media indicated an explosion was heard in the strategic city of Bandar Abbas.
Targeting infrastructure
Bushehr province, home to a nuclear power plant, has been the primary target of intense US airstrikes over the past two days. Despite the flurry of reports, the governor of Bushehr was quick to deny that the nuclear power plant or Kharg Island had sustained any direct hits from the projectiles. This came as an attempt to reassure the public amidst the ambiguity imposed by the authorities. No official statement has yet been issued specifying the precise locations of the explosions or the actual extent of the damage.
US Central Command position
These events come as the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced a new round of strikes on Wednesday night. These strikes targeted approximately 90 Iranian military sites. According to a video statement released by the US military, the operation included advanced air defense systems, coastal surveillance assets, and large missile and drone depots, as well as naval capabilities and military logistics infrastructure along the Iranian coast.
Despite Washington’s earlier announcement of a “cessation” of its attacks, the continued explosions since this morning indicate that the region remains in a state of open and unprecedented confrontation. This places Iran’s military and economic infrastructure under unprecedented pressure, with no clear diplomatic avenues for de-escalation in sight.
