Rome, Italy – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that she has reached a strategic agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron to establish a new international coalition to support Lebanon. This step comes in anticipation of the phase following the expiration of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate, signaling an increasing European role in ensuring the country’s security and stability.
A Coalition to Coordinate International Efforts
Meloni explained that this agreement focuses on forming an international umbrella to oversee joint coordination of political, economic, and security efforts. The coalition aims to ensure the continuity of international backing for the Lebanese state and its institutions, especially in light of the growing challenges surrounding the future of the UN presence in southern Lebanon and the impacts of regional developments on border areas.
Strengthening State Institutions and Addressing Crises
The European initiative primarily seeks to mobilize a broad package of international support that contributes to empowering Lebanese state institutions to fulfill their roles. These efforts come at a vital time to help Lebanon face the compounded repercussions of the financial, economic, and security crises that have burdened the country for many years.
Experts and observers believe that the proposed coalition may provide a new and effective structural framework for cooperation among donor countries. Support will be intensively focused on strengthening the capabilities of the Lebanese Armed Forces, backing vital civil institutions, and activating development and reconstruction programs to ensure the country’s recovery.
International Momentum to Consolidate Stability
This Italian-French move aligns with a notable international momentum regarding the Lebanese file, as the United States and the Gulf Cooperation Council previously called in a joint statement to insulate the Lebanese negotiation track from regional conflicts. Views also converged on the necessity of disarming non-state groups and establishing state authority over the entire Lebanese territory.
This growing diplomatic coordination reflects the international community’s desire to forge sustainable security and political arrangements that limit the repercussions of the open crises the region is experiencing and lay firm foundations for Lebanon’s stability in the coming phase.
