  • Close Monitoring of Regional Maritime Security

London, United Kingdom – The International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced the temporary suspension of its vessel and seafarer evacuation plan from the Strait of Hormuz. This decision comes in the wake of an attack on a ship in the Gulf of Oman, as the organization seeks to obtain sufficient clarifications and precise details regarding the incident before taking any additional field actions.

Temporary Suspension of Evacuation Procedures

The organization explained that the decision to pause the implementation of the evacuation plan is a necessary precautionary step at the current time. This suspension will remain in effect until a comprehensive security assessment is completed, in parallel with the collection of detailed data from relevant maritime and security authorities to ensure the accuracy of subsequent information and decisions.

The organization also emphasized that this measure primarily aims to protect the safety of maritime navigation and crews working in the region. These waters are considered among the most sensitive maritime areas in the world due to the high commercial density and the responsibility placed on the organization to ensure the safe passage of ships.

Targeted Vessel Outside Operational Scope

In terms of technical clarifications, the organization confirmed that the ship targeted in the Gulf of Oman was not operating within its approved evacuation plan. It noted that there is no direct link between this security incident and the logistical operations managed by the organization to regulate the movement of ships and seafarers in vital waterways.

This clarification aims to limit the scope of the crisis to the individual incident, with the organization emphasizing its independence in managing strategic maritime corridors. The organization is working to separate regulatory tasks from the repercussions of sudden security events to ensure that international maritime operations are not unnecessarily disrupted.

Close Monitoring of Regional Maritime Security

The IMO continues to coordinate closely with competent maritime and security authorities to follow up on the developments of the situation. The Strait of Hormuz receives widespread international attention due to its fundamental role in the stability of global trade and energy supplies, as countries around the world rely primarily on this corridor to transport a significant share of their oil and gas needs.

The organization emphasized that it is in constant session to review developments, pledging to issue immediate updates as soon as additional information becomes available. Future decisions regarding the resumption or modification of evacuation procedures will be based on subsequent security assessments, to ensure the stability of maritime transport and spare crews any risks that may arise from escalating tensions.
