Cairo, Egypt – The Arab Republic of Egypt welcomed the decision of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level, mandated by the Arab leaders, during its resumed 165th regular session held in Amman, Jordan.
During the session, Nabil Fahmy was unanimously elected Secretary-General of the League of Arab States for a five-year term beginning July 1, 2026.
This step is considered evidence of Arab consensus on managing the next phase of joint action.
Appreciation for the Egyptian role
This decision comes within the framework of supporting the development of cooperation mechanisms within the League of Arab States.
It also aims to enhance its ability to address escalating regional challenges.
This comes amidst complex political and security circumstances in the region, necessitating greater coordination among member states.
Cairo welcomed the selection, affirming that the decision reflects appreciation for the role Egypt,
under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, plays in supporting joint Arab action.
Furthermore, the decision recognizes the fraternal relations Egypt enjoys
with Arab states and its ongoing efforts to promote regional stability.
Diplomatic experience for Fahmy and thanks to Abu El-Gheit
Egypt indicated that the selection of Nabil Fahmy comes in recognition of his long diplomatic career and extensive experience in foreign policy matters.
The decision also stems from his previous role representing Egypt at both the regional and international levels.
This decision enhances the prospects for improving the performance of the Arab League in the coming period.
Egypt also expressed its thanks and appreciation to outgoing Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit for his efforts during his tenure.
Furthermore, Egypt commended his contributions to managing important Arab issues and strengthening the League’s role in addressing the challenges the region has witnessed in recent years.
