Minneapolis, USA – A US federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to subpoena Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and several other local officials as part of an investigation into immigration policies and cooperation with federal authorities.
The ruling came after the US Department of Justice sought documents and records from state officials as part of an investigation into the extent to which local authorities are complying with federal immigration laws, amid escalating tensions between Washington and several states over this issue.
The judge ruled that the justifications for the subpoenas lacked sufficient legal basis, noting that the requested actions could constitute an overreach of federal authority and raised concerns about the autonomy of local institutions in managing their affairs.
The ruling included a halt to the subpoenas issued to the governor and other officials, a move observers considered a legal victory for local authorities against federal pressure related to immigration.
Minnesota officials welcomed the ruling, affirming that the state would continue to operate within the framework of existing laws, upholding the rights of residents and local communities without succumbing to what they described as political pressure.
This development comes at a time of intense debate surrounding immigration in the United States. Legal battles are escalating between the US administration and several states regarding the boundaries of authority between the federal government and local governments, particularly concerning the implementation of immigration policies and border control.
