Brussels, Belgium – The European Union called on Israel to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amid escalating tensions on Lebanon’s southern border.
Concerns are growing about a wider confrontation in the region,
and the EU stressed the importance of adhering to international law and relevant UN resolutions.
European stance on escalation
The European position came in response to the rapidly evolving security situation in southern Lebanon.
The EU stressed that any military actions or movements on the ground must respect the sovereignty
and stability of states. Furthermore, any steps that could escalate tensions must be avoided.
The European Union affirmed that the stability of Lebanon is a regional and international priority.
Therefore, it called on all parties to exercise restraint and refrain
from any actions that could lead to further escalation or threaten regional security.
A call to abide by international law
The statement stressed the importance of respecting international humanitarian law
and the need to protect civilians and avoid targeting civilian infrastructure.
At the same time, it emphasized that diplomatic solutions remain the only way to resolve existing conflicts.
The European Union noted that the continued tension on
the Lebanese-Israeli border could have serious repercussions for regional security.
For this reason, it called for intensified international efforts
to contain the crisis and prevent it from escalating into wider confrontations.
