Brussels, Belgium – European Union leaders concluded their two-day summit in Brussels with a set of recommendations focusing on financial, economic, and security issues.
The recommendations also addressed migration, combating drug trafficking, enlargement, and relations with neighboring countries.
This was all part of a comprehensive vision to strengthen the Union’s stability in the coming period.
Multi-year financial framework
The European Council called for accelerating work on the next Multiannual Financial Framework.
It also urged intensified efforts to reach an agreement before the end of 2026.
This would ensure the adoption of legislation in 2027 and the uninterrupted flow of European funding from January 2028.
On migration, the leaders stressed the importance of continuing to work together in accordance with EU and international law.
They also agreed to hold an expanded strategic discussion at the October 2026 summit.
Furthermore, they affirmed the adoption of a comprehensive approach to combating drugs, integrating health, social, and security dimensions.
In addition, they called for enhanced international cooperation and the prosecution of organized crime networks.
Expansion and relations with neighboring countries
The leaders welcomed the renewed momentum in the European enlargement process,
with the launch of accession negotiations with Moldova and the commencement of the first working groups.
They also reaffirmed their support for the Western Balkan countries’ accession process based on reforms and merit.
The European Council expressed its concern about the Ebola outbreak in Africa
and called for urgent international coordination and support for the World Health Organization.
It also condemned attempts at external interference in Armenia,
reiterating its commitment to supporting Armenia’s sovereignty and democratic institutions.
Furthermore, it reaffirmed its support for international justice and its independence.
