Rome, Italy – Exchanges of statements between US President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have revealed escalating tensions between the two allies,
following months of signs of political estrangement over several international issues, most notably the potential conflict with Iran.
The crisis erupted after a phone interview Trump gave to an Italian television channel,
during which he claimed that Meloni had “begged” him for a photo opportunity at the recent G7 summit in Evian, France.
However, the Italian Prime Minister vehemently denied this, calling the account “completely fabricated.”
Meloni responds strongly
Meloni expressed her astonishment at Trump’s remarks, emphasizing that she did not understand why he was treating his allies in this manner.
In a video message posted on her social media accounts, she stated that the attributed remarks were baseless.
She added, “Italy does not beg from anyone, and cannot accept this characterization.”
She also criticized what she perceived as the US president’s leniency towards the West’s adversaries,
contrasting it with his treatment of some of the United States’ traditional allies.
Accumulated disputes
These statements come amid a clear decline in relations between the two sides,
after Meloni was considered one of Trump’s closest European allies.
She was the only European leader to attend his inauguration in early 2015.
However, disagreements began to surface after Meloni opposed the US war against Iran.
She also criticized Trump’s earlier remarks targeting Pope Leo XIV, describing them at the time as unacceptable.
Broad political support in Italy
Trump’s remarks sparked a wave of solidarity with Meloni within Italian political circles,
with President Sergio Mattarella declaring his support for the prime minister.
Conversely, figures from across the political spectrum criticized the US president’s approach.
Italian officials and parliamentarians considered Trump’s statements an insult to Italy and its institutions,
emphasizing that relations between the two countries should be based on mutual respect.
Others viewed the attack as reflecting Trump’s displeasure with Meloni independent stances on certain international issues.
