Moscow, Russia – Russia has reiterated its support for the role of the Hashemite Custodianship in overseeing and protecting Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. Consequently, Moscow emphasized the importance of maintaining the historical and legal status quo in the holy city. Moreover, the Russian Foreign Ministry called for an immediate cessation of military escalation in the Gaza Strip. It warned against the worsening humanitarian situation and the continued loss of civilian lives. As a result, Russia views the current priority as lowering tensions. This is needed to create conditions for the return of political negotiations. Thus, the Hashemite Custodianship stands out as an essential pillar for religious and political stability in Jerusalem according to the Russian perspective.

Necessity of Preserving the Historical Status Quo

Moscow asserts that protecting holy sites under the umbrella of the Hashemite Custodianship is a necessary safety valve to prevent the situation in the holy city from exploding. Accordingly, Russia opposes any attempts to alter the legal or historical identity of Jerusalem. In addition, Moscow believes that religious stability is closely linked to halting hostilities in Gaza. Conversely, Russian diplomacy points out that continued escalation will only lead to further regional instability. Consequently, preserving the role of the Hashemite Custodianship requires concerted international efforts. These efforts are necessary to ensure that holy sites are not subjected to any violations.

Russia has demanded that all parties exercise restraint and engage in a comprehensive political path that addresses the roots of the crisis rather than merely managing the conflict. On the other hand, it warned that continued military violence would complicate opportunities for a just political solution. Consequently, returning to the negotiating table has become an urgent necessity to protect civilians and avoid widening the scope of the conflict. Ultimately, the Russian position remains steadfast in supporting historical and political rights regarding Jerusalem and its holy sites under the supervision of the Hashemite Custodianship. Accordingly, Moscow continues its diplomatic contacts to push toward a sustainable de-escalation. This aims to preserve regional security and stability.
