Tehran, Iran – Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator with the United States, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, accused Washington of failing to uphold its commitments following Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs.
He also warned that continuing negotiations between the two sides could become “impossible” if the agreed-upon pledges are not implemented.
Iranian commitments and conditions
Ghalibaf stated in a post on the X platform that “the Zionist aggression against the southern suburbs of Beirut
has once again demonstrated that the United States either lacks the will or the ability to fulfill its commitments.”
He added, “There is no point in discussing continuing this path if the commitments are not implemented.”
These remarks come as talks continue between Tehran and Washington
regarding a preliminary memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war.
However, he pointed to a clear divergence in positions on regional issues related to the negotiations.
Iran stipulates that any agreement with the United States must include a cessation of hostilities in Lebanon,
given the ongoing Israeli military operations against Hezbollah. Hezbollah is a key ally of Tehran in the region.
Consequently, the negotiation process is linked to developments on the ground outside the direct framework of the negotiations.
Escalation in both directions following the Dahieh raids
In a related development, Iranian state media quoted Mohammad Jafar Asadi, deputy commander of the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s operations,
as saying that Israel’s “crimes” in Beirut’s southern suburbs “will not go unanswered.”
He also hinted at the possibility of a regional response to the recent developments.
These statements come after Israeli airstrikes targeted sites in Beirut’s southern suburbs,
which Tel Aviv claimed belonged to Hezbollah.
This has led to a political and media escalation coinciding with the indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
These negotiations face complications related to regional issues and the need for implementation guarantees.
