Tel Aviv, Israel – In a sign of escalating military tensions and a widening target bank, the Israeli news site Walla! News revealed today official security recommendations submitted to the Israeli leadership. These recommendations call for punitive measures against Iranian national infrastructure should Tehran decide to escalate its attacks against Israel.

A shift in response strategy

According to the report published by the website, assessments by senior Israeli security officials concluded that it is necessary to move beyond the traditional response targeting military sites. The report stated that if Iran continues to increase pressure on the ground and escalate its attacks, it must move to targeting Iranian infrastructure.

Despite the sensitivity of this announcement, the source did not provide any further details about the nature of the targets that might fall under the category of “infrastructure,” such as energy facilities, power plants, or vital communications networks. Nor did it indicate a possible timeframe for launching such operations, simply stating that it is a strategic option under consideration by decision-makers in Tel Aviv.

Open conflict on all fronts

These security recommendations come amid a volatile regional climate, marked by intense clashes and Israel’s announcement of airstrikes on more than 20 targets deep inside Iran, including the Mahshahr petrochemical complex, in response to a barrage of ballistic missile attacks launched by Iran toward Israel. With the Israeli military continuing to declare itself engaged in “prolonged combat” and preparing to call up reserve forces, the traditional rules of engagement appear to have been superseded, and scenarios involving attacks on the vital interests of both countries loom on the horizon.

These Israeli trends reflect growing concern about Iran’s ability to maintain a steady and intensive pace of attacks, prompting the security establishment to brandish the “strategic option” of targeting Iran’s economic and service infrastructure as a maximum pressure tactic to halt the attacks. Meanwhile, the international community is cautiously observing these developments, amid genuine fears that any targeting of infrastructure could lead to a complete collapse of the fragile balance and a slide into a full-blown war that would reshape the map of conflict in the Middle East.
